During the three months ending May 2011, 4.1 million people in the EU5 region (France, Italy, UK, Germany, Spain) used a music streaming service on their mobile phone. This means that less than 2 percent of the European mobile audience and 4 percent of the European smartphone audience made use of the services, but over the past 3 months the number of users across the EU5 region has increased by 5 percent. Music streaming services had the highest reach amongst the mobile audience in France (2.8 percent), followed by the UK (2.4 percent).
Across the markets analysed Last.fm, Spotify and local radio stations came out top. In Spain, Spotify was used by nearly half (48 percent) of all people who used mobile music streaming services. The leading service for mobile users in the UK was the BBC that attracted 46 percent of the music streaming audience in May 2011. Last.fm didn’t make the top spot in any of the EU5 markets, but ranked in the top 3 for Spain, Germany and the UK.
